The couple met in 2006 while Peter was playing for Liverpool and Abbey instantly distanced herself from the WAG tag. “I try not to do anything related to him,” she says. “He does his work and I do mine.”

Earlier this year, a film crew followed Abbey and her mum Karen, 50, on a nine-day trek across the Indian desert with a family of gypsy dancers for a programme called The Parent Trip. They travelled by camel, sleeping on the ground, living on curry cooked on a dung fire and performing with the dancers. It was quite a stretch from Abbey’s glamorous life. “I loved every minute,” she says. “We were totally out of our comfort zone.”

As a child Abbey dreamed of becoming a model, a singer or an actress. She did well at school. “I loved history, English and science and never got less than a B grade,” she says. She proved to the nation she was a beauty with brains by winning the Chris Moyles’ Quiz Night on Channel 4 last year. However her fiancé needed a little more convincing.

“I had to show him my GCSE results to prove how clever I was,” she says. Abbey started modelling when her mother’s friend entered her into Britain’s Next Top Model competition.

“I came second and my life went crazy,” she explains. Abbey started working for magazines such as Maxim, GQ and FHM and fronted a lingerie range for Ultimo.

Despite her glamorous lifestyle, Abbey says her upbringing keeps her grounded. “I’ve had times in my life where I’ve struggled for money and times when I’ve been extremely privileged so I know I shouldn’t take anything for granted. I still know the value of things. My mum would kill me if I changed.”

Her determination to succeed is clear and Abbey insists on sitting in on every business meeting about her work.

A family is also on the cards for Abbey and Peter, who are planning a wedding for next summer. “I’m one of four and have always wanted a big family. I used to love playing with my brothers and sisters on Christmas Day. That’s what I want for my children, when I get round to having them.”

Losing her toned figure through pregnancy doesn’t worry Abbey at all. “I couldn’t care less about my figure,” she says. For now, staying fit is uppermost in Abbey’s mind but she is no slave to gymwork. “I hate the gym. I prefer to go horse riding or play tennis.”

She doesn’t believe in fad diets either but admits she does try to avoid fatty foods in the build-up to a shoot, with little success. “I’ve got zero willpower and love my food, especially cakes and sweets.”

Abbey says that she and Peter don’t need to live the high life to have fun. The model’s breezy attitude means she doesn’t take life too seriously. “I take each day as it comes. I don’t have a five-year plan or know what I’m doing next year. I just live for today.”
